The 1778 map by Thomas Hutchins shows “Wakaygagh”, the Algonquin word for the trading post. The first settlement was named Little Fort in honor of the trading post. By 1849, the people of Little Fort changed the name of the town to Waukegan, which was based on the Algonquin name found in the 1778 map.
