When Ohio State completed a 26-21 victory over archrival
Michigan, it put the finishing touches on only the sixth perfect season in the program’s 123-year existence.
For one of the most acclaimed teams in college football
history, that would seem to be an exceedingly low number.
For example, should Notre Dame defeat Alabama in the
BCS National Championship Game, it would mark a 13th
unbeaten, untied season for the Fighting Irish.
Michigan boasts 15 perfect seasons although six of
those came during short seasons occurring before 1900.
Oklahoma, which had an NCAA-record 47-game winning
streak in the mid-1950s, has 12 unblemished seasons on its
résumé, while Alabama has 10 and Texas has nine.
The Buckeyes could have had many more perfect seasons – an amazing 21 more, in fact – but the team suffered
either a single loss or tie multiple times over the years.
Seven
times – 1919, 1920, 1969, 1970, 1975, 1979 and 2006 – Ohio
State lost for the only time in the final
