The Buckeyes kicked off their 122nd season on
the gridiron Sept.
3 with a 42-0 victory over visiting
Akron, a squad that played in a way that did not
make anyone forget it won only one game last
season.
Not that any of the players, coaches and
105,001 fans, mostly clad in scarlet and gray, were
hoping for anything else after one of the most difficult offseasons in program history.
There were quite a few similarities between
this opener and the ones of recent vintage: Ohio
Stadium was packed, the Buckeyes were pumped,
the opponent was poor and the victory bell rang at
the end.
Ohio State still played efficient offense and
smothering defense, and when it was all over, the
players gathered in the south end zone with the
coaches, staff members and cheerleaders to sing
the alma mater while the marching band played.
