PRESENTATION OF THE COUNTRY Bianca.cnme Dacian and Roman vestiges from the archaeological site in the Orăștie mountains. Sarmizegetusa Regia was the capital and the most important military, religious and political centre of the Dacians before the wars with the Roman Empire. Erected on top of a 1200 m high mountain, the fortress, comprising six citadels, was the core of a strategic defensive system in the Orăștie Mountains, Hunedoara County. 40 km away from Sarmizegetusa Regia stands Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, or the remains of it, really. These two should not be confused, though. Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa is a Roman colony formed after the conquest of Dacia by Traian, named after Sarmizegetusa Regia, which was the Capital of Dacia under King Decebal. The city was destroyed by the Goths. Today Ulpia Traiana remains in ruins, with a partly preserved forum, an amphitheatre, and remnants of several temples. 1
