History of Magazines: According to a British Philosopher, Francis Bacon, the printing press “changed the whole face and state of things throughout the world.” Johannes Guttenberg created the printing press in 1440 as a way of mass- producing text instead of it needing to be copied by hand. This meant that text could be copied a lot quicker and a lot more efficiently. In 1663 Johann Rist (a German theologian and poet) created the Erbauliche Monaths-Unterredungen (“Edifying Monthly Discussions”). This is said to be one of the first magazines and it last 5 years with other countries such as England, France and Italy creating similar products. In 1672 Le Mercure Galant was published by Jean Donneau de Vize (a French writer and playwright). This publication contained news, songs, short verses and gossip.
