The town was originally named Hanley, after an employee of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad. The name’s similarity to Hawley, Minn., led to mail deliveries to the wrong towns. The problem was solved in 1886 when Hanley was renamed Hanley Falls. The postal officials just didn’t care that there were no falls in Hanley.
