The Premier Journal of Antiques & At all the best Antiques Shops and Shows Collectibles in the Midwest Section One Vol. 25 No. 8 • “Vintage, Collectible, & Antique Wonders” • August 2015 Route 66 Remembering “the mother road” Mom collected this matchbook from The Town House Restaurant in Elk City, Okla. Mom saved postcards, matchbooks, and/or a matchcover from five of the eight states along the route; she’s missing California, Illinois, and Kansas. Route 66 Kansas cards are rare. because the highway went through only12.8 miles of the Sunflower State. U.S Highway 66, coined “the mother road” by John Steinbeck in The Grapes of Wrath, opened in 1926, connecting Chicago to Los Angeles. In 2005, when Mom discovered I was collecting Route 66 postcards, she sent me this map card. (Photos by Virginia Broich unles
