Codes and Conventions of Fashion Magazines Masthead – the masthead is the title block for the magazine, usually this is the most eye catching convention on the cover and it has to be distinctive. Menu – the list of contents inside the page. Pugs – used to catch the reader’s eye they are placed either at the top right corner or the top left corner of the magazine. The price and logo is positioned there. Secondary lead – a sneak preview of an inside article or usually, usually features a picture. Sidebar – an additional box next to the main feature of the magazine. Splash – main story of the front page accompanied by a photograph and a headline. Spread – a story that covers more than one page. Stand first – a sentence after a headline and before an article that ‘sells’ a feature to the reader. Strapline – subheading positioned below the initial headline.
