READING COMPREHENSION ACTIVITIES PRE-TEXT ACTIVITIES What’s in the text? Choose a text and from it select 5-8 items of vocabulary for presentation as a “word rose”: these should not be “context free” (e.g. structure words, neutral or very general adjectives), nor should they be “key words” that would closely typify the main meaning of the text: the aim should be to allow the students a reasonable chance of coming close to the text without restricting their imaginations. Put up the word rose on the blackboard. Tell the students that they are going to read a text in which these words appear (not necessarily in the order presented). Ask them, in groups of four, to speculate on the content of the text. Give out copies of the text for comparison and discussion. Crumpling and Predicting Use a story on a piece of A4 paper and then crumpled it into a ball. Bits of the writing could be seen.
