Samantha Moore May 4, 2017 Auburn’s First Female SGA President Reflects on Her Tenure Cynthia Holland Torbert, Auburn University’s first female Student Government Association president, said her decision to run for president stemmed from a simple desire to help Auburn University- not to make a statement. “I know there were some people who thought I was just running because I was a girl and trying to prove a point. That was not true at all,” said Torbert. “I think the most qualified candidate, the person who does the best job, should excel regardless of race, color or sex.” Torbert was elected president in 1988 in a runoff against male opponent, Len Shannon. She won with 54 percent of the vote in the runoff. Torbert was a journalism major and attended law school at the University of Alabama after graduation. She now works as a career law clerk for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama in Montgomery. Upon her decision to run for president, her friends and peers were
