The Concept of Drama Therapy in Autism: Role-Playing, Mutuality and Empathy Daniella Wircer & Ofra Walter Of late, drama therapy has also been used as an effective therapeutic tool for children on the autism spectrum. The dramatic activity motivates them to take an active part in the treatment. This study examined the drama therapist's perception of his/her work with autistic children and the use of role-playing as a tool that promotes the child’s empathic abilities. This qualitative study included interviews with six drama therapists carried out via Zoom due to the Omicron wave outbreak. Study findings showed that the drama therapist’s positive perception towards the autistic child leads to optimal treatment, which yields change and growth. Moreover, when the drama therapist joins the world of the autistic child and even make use of the autistic ‘characteristics’, a common basis of communication is created that enables reciprocity, shared empathy and effective therapeutic work.
