Art in a Glass Container: The Creative Terrarium as an Art Therapy Intervention Naama Livne & Tami Gavron This paper describes “thee creative terrarium", a new intervention tool in the field of art therapy which combines elements from nature-based therapy, therapeutic gardening and art therapy. The creative terrarium consists of a miniature garden placed inside a glass container containing plants, art materials and found objects that together form an imaginary world. This article chronicles its development from its initial creation in the imagination of the therapist-researchers as a theoretical idea, empirical testing, and application as a therapeutic tool. The theoretical aspects of the creative terrarium are described in detail along with the studies conducted and their results, and two clinical interventions in which the creative terrarium was used in group processes and in individual art therapy.
