National Sorry Day in Australia National Sorry Day is held on the 26th of May each year. This day gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities. Stolengenerations refer to Indigenous Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communities The first National Sorry Day was held on May 26, 1998, which was one year after the tabling of a report about the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. An important part of healing Sorry Day is an opportunity to pay tribute to Stolen Generations members and to remember those who have passed into the Dreaming. Having a national Sorry Day was a recommendation of the 1997 ‘Bringing Them Home’ report. This report examined the large scale removal of Aboriginal children as a result of government policies and the significant negative impacts.
