Conflict in the Congo Special Edition November 10, 2014 Mining Process of Conflict Minerals by: Jillian Harris The mining industry of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is rich in their natural resources. Congo is estimated to have $24 trillion worth of untapped deposits of mineral ores that include the world's largest reserves of significant quantities of diamonds, gold, and copper. Armed groups trade ores that are coltan, tantalum, tungsten, gold, and tin. Because artisanal mining operations require little capital, they are unregulated and occur within protected areas, around threatened species. Militia groups have control of many mines. They impose heavy taxes on the miners. The money from mining the elements is used to finance the war. Democratic Republic of Congo
