COMPETENCE TESTING A test which is used to measure test-takers’ acquired capability to understand and produce a certain level of foreign language, defined by phonological, lexical grammatical, sociolinguistic and discourse constituents. In order to make test-takers’ competence measurable and visible, testers turn, out of necessity, to their actual performance which may indicate their competence. COMMUNICATIVE TESTING Morrow (1979) has defined communicative tests as being interaction-based, unpredictable (that is, responses cannot be predicted as in natural communicative environments), authentic, behaviour-based and so on. The construct underlying this approach is the theory of communicative competence (Hymes, 1970) which has now been extended to include a third component: 1. Grammatical competence, 2.
