King in Yellow is a collection of ten short stories by the American writer Robert W. Chambers. The actual play The King in Yellow is not included as it is too dangerous to do so. Excerpts have been provided to us by the proper authorities to facilitate the study of this mid-century phenomena. The influence of these stories can be seen in the work of H.P. Lovecraft, Stephen King, Joseph K. Fink and indeed began the genre of weird fiction. Robert W. Chambers was born in Brooklyn in 1827. He began his career as an illustrator and sold pieces to Life, Truth, and Vogue magazines. Then, for reasons unclear, he devoted his time to writing, producing his first novel, In the Quarter. His most famous, and perhaps most meritorious, effort is The King in Yellow, a collection of short stories published in 1895.
