Asks patient to keep lips closed Tympanic membrane: Positions the patient’s head to one side and straightens the ear canal appropriately • For an adult, pulls the pinna up and back • For a child, pull the pinna down and back Temporal: Places probe flush on center of forehead, depresses button, and holds button depressed the entire time Slides probe in a straight line across the forehead to the hairline Releases button and reads temperature Leaves thermometer in recommended time Reads temperature Correctly disposes of used materials Places stethos Less
