Network Modularity Controls the Speed of Information Diffusion Hao Peng,1 Azadeh Nematzadeh,2 Daniel M. Romero,1 and Emilio Ferrara3, ∗ 1 Schoolof Information, University of Michigan 2 S&P Global 3 Information Sciences Institute, University of Southern California (Dated: October 15, 2019) The rapid diffusion of information and the adoption of ideas are of critical importance in situations as diverse as emergencies, collective actions, or advertising and marketing. Although the dynamics of large cascades have been extensively studied in various contexts, few have examined the mechanisms that govern the efficiency of information diffusion. Here, by employing the linear threshold model on networks with communities, we demonstrate that a prominent network feature—the modular arXiv:1910.05870v1 [physics.soc-ph] 14 Oct 2019 structure—strongly affects the speed of information diffusion. Our simulation results show that, when global cascades are enabled, there exists an optimal network modular
