Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo by Rick Dawson Birds need nature law reform Australia is an avian wonderland, home to 1,200 different birds, 45% of which are found nowhere else in the world. Our incredible landscapes and unique wildlife provide one of the most accessible means for people to connect with nature and the diversity of our native bird life. Birds also indicate the overall health of nature and sadly the prognosis is concerning. Around one sixth of Australia’s birds are now at risk of extinction and even “common” birds are showing signs of decline. We urgently need to fix our broken nature laws so that they protect and restore our birds and the places they call home. What is needed to reverse the decline of birds and nature? 1. Ensure Environment Protection Australia (EPA) is effective, independent and accountable. 2.
