Along with Seamus Heaney, Hughes stands as one of the mostread contemporary UK poets in secondary education. As a translator, novelist, poet, and essayist, Hughes is recognized as one of the UK’s greatest literary artists. Standing at between six and sixandahalf feet, the gaunt Hughes cut a puzzling figure. His gentle and gravellyandreedy voice belied his struggles. His life was not without controversy. He married Sylvia Plath in 1956, published his first major work ‘The Hawk in the Rain’ the following year, travelled to America, taught at the University of Massachusetts, returned to England in 1959, had a daughter one year later, a son two years after.
