Dilini Gorsia 180 Degree Rule The 180 degree rule states that the camera should remain on the same side of an imaginary line. The line is drawn perpendicular to the Camera’s viewpoint in the establishing shot of the scene. The main purpose of the rule is to enforce continuity of the film. It is important that the rule should never be broken due to the fact that it will create confusion for the audience and cause them to lose focus and become disorientated which could result to them missing vital parts of the film. The only way to cross the line without disorientating the audience is to show the camera movement across the line. Once the line has been crossed, and the movement has been shown, you have to stay on that side of the line, unless you show the movement back over it.
