At the beginning of the 20th century fashionable men wore trousers,
waistcoat and coat. They also wore top hats.
In 1900 women wore long dresses. It was not acceptable for women
to show their legs.
However, during World War I women's clothes became more
practical.
The bikini was invented in 1946 and in 1965, Mary Quant invented
the mini skirt and clothes became even more informal.
Transport
In 1915 the Germans began using Zeppelin airships. However, Zeppelins were very vulnerable to
explosion.
The first cars appeared at the end of the 19th century. After the First World War they became
cheaper and more common.
Communication
Letter writing was an important means of communication for Americans across the country, but the
decades after the Second World War were characterized by the adoption of the telephone into
American homes.
In the early 20th century only a small minority of people had a telephone. They did not become
common till the 1960s.
