Wärtsilä Ship Design offices in China and Poland developed the four new LNG carrier designs ranging in capacity from 3,000 to 20,000 cubic metres: WSD59 3K, WSD59 6.5K, WSD55 12K, and WSD50 20K. The ships, with applications in LNG feedering and bunkering, can be used not just by LNG shipping companies but also by companies offering LNG-fuelling services. The company calls its 10,000 cubic metres capacity WSD55 12K LNG carrier design, which consumes 13.5 tonnes per day at a service speed of 14.5 knots, the best in its class for fuel efficiency. While 4,000 vessels of various types have thus far been built using designs from Wärtsilä Ship Design, this is its first LNG carrier design offering. Leveraging its diverse LNG-fuel expertise, Wärtsilä Ship Design plans to offer the new LNG carriers in a combined ship construction package with other Wärtsilä products, for example dual-fuel engines and Wärtsilä LNGPac fuel handling systems, to reduce construction costs.
