Mission:
Goodwill Industries’s (Goodwill) mission is “to enhance the dignity and quality of life of
individuals and families” by performing several key functions (Goodwill Industries International,
2013). These functions include “strengthening communities, eliminating barriers to opportunity
and helping people in need reach their full potential through learning and the power of
work” (Goodwill Industries International, 2013). Lewis (1977) states that:
Goodwill could show America what ‘service’ and Christianity should be,
[Helm] said; then business and labor might adopt Goodwill principles and
procedures so that every citizen would attain the highest ‘mental, moral and
physical growth’ of which he or she was capable. This, [Helm] asserted
repeatedly, was Goodwill’s mission - to save the waste in men as well as things
and to give any who were willing to work regardless of handicap or circumstance,
‘a chance, not charity’ (p. 68).
