Unemployment as a Social Problem
A social problem is defined as any matter that directly or indirectly affects members
of the society. Social problems normally deviate from a given set of ideals or moral values. For
an issue to qualify as a social problem, it has to be viewed by some members of the community
as being undesirable. The most common causes of social problems include evil people or people
who are mentally ill and are left untreated, unrealistic expectations of classes or races within a
society, the division of races and classes in a society, and even industrialization of society.
Sociologists have a difficult time deciding on exactly what specific features of society are a
cause for the social problems that are experienced. Social problems among individuals can be
caused by traumatic events during childhood.
