The 180 degree rule is a
guideline used in
filmmaking.
It refers to the
onscreen relationship
between two or more
characters or objects
within a scene.
An
imaginary line is used
called the axis/line of
action.
It connects the
characters/objects by
keeping the camera on
one side of this axis for
every shot in the scene.
The first character will be
framed right of the second character, who is then framed left of the first.
If the
camera passes over the axis, it is known as crossing the line or jumping the line.
When using the 180 degree rule, it is important to remember that the camera should
be used as if it was the audience present in the scene.
Crossing the line when
filming over the shoulder shots disrupts the person’s eye line, this means that the
actors’ eye lines do not match up.
