common, but is most definitely at the quieter
end of town, with families continuing to settle
down here as a result. It is, in fact, the heart
of suburban Clapham, with row upon row of
residential back streets disguised by genteel
high streets with independent boutiques, with
not a chain in sight.
Balham Hill might be the gateway to
the area, with its Northern line tube and
other general amenities, but exit towards
the common and laid-back bars with great
gardens make for perfect summertime
drinking dens. The residential streets behind
are typified by red-brick Victorian and
Edwardian terraces turned into duplexes or
retained as chunky family homes.
