You could al- most say I was a parcel of smuggled goods for this whole journey. When I was born my parents were not integrated into French society at all, they were still completely immersed in the Al- banian culture and traditions. So my Albanian origin did indeed count a great deal in my life, and my entire childhood was suffused with the traditions, customs and habits of the Balkans. Moreover, this was a time when Albanian emi- grants were arriving in number; many of them took shelter with us for a few days to give them- selves time to find something better, to settle in France, for example, or somewhere else.
