Thunderstorms gave way to thunderous
applause, as more than 130 students
from the Class of 2012 graduated before a
gymnasium filled to the rafters with family,
friends, and well-wishers.
The ceremony,
which was moved indoors due to the
inclement weather, featured music performed
by Onteora grads, including a rousing
rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner”
by Andrew Russell, an original rock song
played by Brandon Meakem and Paul Alexander, and
a moving version of “You’ve Got a Friend”
sung by Katharine Martucci, Edith Lerner,
and Seraphina Mallon-Brieman.
Speakers
included Valedictorian Tyler Barringer,
Salutatorian Elena Schaef, Class President
Katelyn Sudlik, and retiring teacher Jean
Douglas.
In her salutatory address, Elena
drew inspiration from the words of Martin
Luther King, Jr.
, who said, “Intelligence
plus character—that is the goal of true
education.
