A local history lecture has sparked a new ‘Glenkens Uprising’ to bring a vital history book back into print. When Peter Aitchison and Andrew Cassell gave a talk on their book, The Lowland Clearances, at an event organised by local history project, The Glenkens Story, many in the capacity CatStrand audience expected to be able to buy their book. However Professor Ted Cowan, who originally coined the phrase ‘Lowland Clearances’, explained that no copies were on sale because it was out of print and Birlinn the publisher was refusing to reprint it. Next day Lucy Brown from Dalry and Castle Douglas- based historian Alistair Livingston started an online petition calling on Birlinn to reprint the book. The petition rapidly attracted hundreds of signatures including historians Tom Devine and Neil Davidson and MSPs Mike Russell, Joan McAlpine and John Finnie. Finally, Birlinn yielded to the pressure and the first copies of the 2016 reprint were dispatched in February. Continued on p4... April/M
