Dalry shopkeeper and founder of the
Glenkens Gazette, Matthew Newton,
and his wife Gill, are moving to
Aberdeen at the beginning of July.
Since their arrival in Dalry nearly 18 years ago, they
have been involved with every aspect of community
life and they will be sorely missed.
Neither Matthew nor Gill had any experience
of running a retail outlet, but after being made
redundant from the NHS Matthew decided the time
had come to fulfil a life-long dream of being selfemployed, and so started the search for a village
shop to run.
Having looked all over Scotland, they
decided that the shop in Dalry that Mr Kerr was
selling fitted the bill, and they took over the business
in September 1995.
A steep learning curve followed, made easier
according to Gill by the excellent staff and patient
customers! However, that first winter was very
testing when the extremely bad weather deprived
them of water and power for over a week and made
it almost impossible to get supplies in for the village.
