That was the dramatic message delivered by squirrel expert Heinz Traut at a ‘Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels’ event held recently in New Galloway which has led to local residents forming the Glenkens Red Squirrel Group. The new group’s aim is to tackle the recent increase in grey squirrels in the area. The greys, a species introduced from North America, pose a significant threat to our red squirrels through competition for food and habitat, but more critically by spreading squirrelpox disease.
