Pleurodesis
Pleurodesis is defined as a procedure wherein the pleural
space or the pleural cavity is artificially eliminated to prevent the adhesion of the visceral and
parietal pleura which are enclosing such space.
Why would it be necessary to artificially remove
the pleural space? This is actually done to prevent the recurrence of dangerous lung problems
like pleural effusion or pneumothorax.
Pleural effusion is known as the condition wherein excess fluid accumulates between the
visceral and parietal pleura of the lungs or what is commonly known as the pleural space.
When
excessive amount of fluid accumulates in the said space, the lungs would not be able to expand
normally thus impairing its normal functioning.
This is the reason why removal of such pleural
space artificially may be necessary.
If pleural effusion is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pleural space, pneumothorax is
the abmoral accumulation of air in the said space.
It can also greatly interfere the lung
