GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD
 One of the most traditional methods.

 Originally used to teach “dead” languages ( and literatures) involving little or no
spoken communication or listening comprehension
 ¨It is a method for which there is no theory.
There is no literature that offers a

 Reading and writing are the major focus; little or no systematic attention is paid to
speaking or listening.

 Vocabulary selection is based on the reading texts used, and words are taught
through bilingual lists, dictionary study, and memorization.

 Grammar is taught deductively - rules are presented and illustrated.

 The sentence is the basic unit of teaching and language practice.
Much of the
lesson is devoted to translating sentences into and out of the target language.
