What is the Purpose of the Child Study Team?
Elementary schools and unified school districts often have special departments or teams that are
dedicated to identifying and helping children with special needs within their student populations.
These are often referred to as child study teams.
The purpose of the child study team is to find
and help children who are struggling for one reason or another before the problem has had a
chance to set them back dramatically.
Child study teams may work with children as young as three in a preschool setting, or as old as
14 in an eighth grade class.
Through combinations of educational, physical, psychological,
speech/language and social work evaluations (when applicable), these teams of caring
professionals are able to assess students’ needs and act accordingly.
