LASIK: During the Procedure
In planning for LASIK eye surgery, the individual should first realize that
they are going to be awake throughout the procedure.
Anesthetic eye drops
are put in the eye for numbing to avoid discomfort and sometimes an oral
sedative will be given to the patient.
The patient will sit in a reclining chair
and have an instrument positioned on their eye to keep their eyelids open.
Then, the first step of the operation, flap creation, begins.
To make a
corneal flap, the surgeon will use either a bladed tool called a
microkeratome or a femtosecond laser.
When creating the corneal flap, the
femtosecond laser stacks thousands of microscopic bubbles that connect to
reveal the tissue below the surface of the cornea while the microkeratome
uses an actual blade to cut the flap.
Similarly, both instruments generate a
hinged flap in preparation for the following step of the procedure.
During Lasik the next step, laser remodeling, the laser is placed over the
patient
