Omar Khayyam wrote his poems in Iran almost a thousand years ago, but they are still prevalent worldwide. His so-called “rubaiyat” (quatrains), four-line stanzas, contain both rejoicing at the moment’s pleasure and philosophical melancholy over the impermanence of existence. Since Omar Khayyam’s death, his masterpiece, the ‘Rubaiyat,’ has been translated into many different languages worldwide, including English. Unfortunately, though we have many interpretations of the ‘Rubaiyat’ in English, none is faithful to the original — not even the most famous translation into English by Edward Fitzgerald Beale. However, each rubai (quatrain) is presented in a relatively faithful translation in this book. In addition, below each quatrain is the corresponding poem in Persian for those interested in reading it in Persian or comparing the original with the translation here.
