In this very special concert you will hear instruments that look familiar,
but which differ from their modern counterparts.
The string instruments are set up with gut strings, with the exception of
the Viola d’Amore.
Indeed, this instrument of Arab origin adopted steel
strings from very early on, and they give it its silvery, resonant sound.
Despite its many strings the Viola d’Amore is not a loud instrument, but
according to Leopold Mozart it was the “sweetest sounding” of all string
instruments.
The Amore you will hear in the hands of Haruko Tanabe
has 7 playing strings and 6 resonance strings.
The Viennese Bass is an instrument type that dates from the Classical
Period.
It is tuned in a combination of thirds and fourths (D-A-D-F#-A)
as opposed to the modern bass which is in fourths throughout.
