POETRY GROUP
popular activity hosted by one of our Social Work
Interns is the Poetry Group, run by Mindy Chettih, an
intern from New York University.
Meeting every Monday
in the conference room, Mindy selects a few poems for
participants to read and discuss.
“Poetry Group gives people a chance to relate to each other
in a different way,” Mindy explains.
“It offers a chance
for some mental exercise, using the poems to evoke the
participants’ emotions and open up a forum to share their
feelings.
”
Mindy has found that this can be a great way to get people to
open up to one another, because just the way that different
people respond to the same poem opens up a wide range
of discussions.
“The participants learn from each other,”
Mindy says, “and everyone always has an awful lot to
say.
”
The goal of poetry group, as with most activities at Adult
Day Health Care, is to create a safe environment in which
participants can be themselves.
