FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION
WHERE DOES IT HAPPEN? THE DIFFERENT TYPESTHE LAW
FGM is practised in 28
African countries, in the
Middle East and Asia.
FGM is often a
prerequisite for marriage,
but it can cause physical
and psychological
damage.
20 of the 28 African
countries where the FGM
is found have banned the
practice.
Penalties
range from
three months
in jail to life
imprisonment.
FGM violates numerous
international human rights
treaties and it is illegal in
most countries of the
world.
The most severe form of
FGM is the infibulation
(total removal of the genitalia and
narrowing of the vaginal opening).
FGM also
includes other
harmful
procedures,
like pricking,
scraping and
cauterising.
