Helena Greco
A great warrior of peace
Helena was born in Abaeté (Brazil), June 15th, 1916.
She was a political activist in
Brazil.
Daughter of Anthony Greco and Josephine Greco Alvares, she was married to Joseph
Bartholomew Greco for 64 years and they had three children: Marília, Heloise and Dirceu.
Having had Pharmaceutical training without ever having practised the profession,
Helena became a reference in the struggle for human rights.
A life for human rights
She was 60 when she joined in the struggle against the military dictatorship.
She
founded and directed the Women s Movement for Amnesty, in Minas Gerais.
The goal of
the movement was the end of torture and a secure life for political exiles.
In 1982, at 66 years, Helen Greco was elected councilor for the Workers Party (PT), which
she had helped found and was reelected.
She didn’t give up in two terms and created and
coordinated the first Permanent Commission of Human Rights in a State organization.
