to a historic island, exploring
a deserted beach, and rubbing
elbows with Civil War soldiers.
It
sounds like an adventure that would
be any youth’s dream – but it’s in
fact a day in the life of a camper
through three Charleston County
Community Education (CE)
programs this past summer.
Over three days in July, students
and chaperones from Burke, Baptist
Hill, and St.
Johns CE summer
camps took part in the Morris Island
Expeditions.
A strategic location in
the Civil War, Morris Island is in the
shadow of Fort Sumter and was the
site of the 54th Massachusetts assault
on Battery Wagner.
It is now an
840-acre, uninhabited island
accessible only by boat – offering
its visitors a real sense of adventure,
and a look into some of Charleston
Harbor’s most beautiful and fragile
natural re
