The heat was
suffocating and strong winds blew sand indiscriminately
above and around, making it difficult for fifteen-year old

her feet no longer a child’s but not yet a woman’s, ploughing
through the burning hot sand.
Only fear provided a
distraction against the constant and agonising blistering of
her feet.
Every few moments, she looked over her shoulder
to see whether Yazhad, the tall, dark nightmare of the town
of Sarfa, was still pursuing her.
He had found her alone,
hanging laundry for her mother outside her home.
The
shock of his rough grip on her arms startled her, and before
she could scream, she felt his large, burly palm clutch her
mouth tightly, slashing her upper lip and making her choke.

she broke free from his grasp with a jolt and bolted into the
desert, terrified for her life.
