May 9, 2024 Leadership message "No work of charity can be more productive of good to society than the careful instruction of women." —Catherine McAuley As Sisters of Mercy in the Philippines, we are grateful for Catherine McAuley’s exciting educational legacy. With joy we remember the first Mercy educators from the former Buffalo regional community—Sisters Miriam John Nash, Mary Harriet O'Connor, Mary Mark Long and Mary Christina Dineen—who came to our country in 1957 to manage Catholic schools for the Columban Fathers in Mindanao. We are delighted that three pre-K-12 schools—Mercy Junior College, Holy Cross High School and the School of St. John the Baptist—continue to thrive under Mercy leadership. A festive alumni homecoming celebration at Holy Cross High School held April 26-28 uplifted sisters in the education ministry, past and present, attending the event. It kicked off a yearlong celebration of the school’s diamond jubilee. We felt humbled as alumni showered us with gratitude.
