A Newsletter for the Friends of the Sisters of Mercy Vol. 12 No. 2, Fall 2018 Treasuring Our Heritage, Embracing Our Future In 1843, Mother Frances Ward arrived in the United States in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with six Sisters of Mercy and began the story of the Sisters of Mercy in the Americas. Times were turbulent. Poverty, exploitation and disease were prevalent. Few social services existed. Adequate housing was lacking. Harsh work conditions were the norm. The times were so dangerous that the bishop requested the sisters wear secular clothes while traveling. These pioneer sisters Mother risked everything because they trusted in God. Frances Warde, Sister M. Josephine Together, these “Seven Sisters” opened schools and established Mercy Cullen, Sister M. Hospital, the first Mercy-sponsored hospital in the world.
