B.
1 Introduction
gLite is grid middleware developed by the Enabling Grids for E-sciencE
(EGEE) project to provide a set of tools for resource sharing.
It combines the
collaborative efforts of scientists and engineers from over 32 countries worldwide to create a grid infrastructure that is robust and highly accessible.
By
collaborating with 30,000 CPUs and about 5 petabytes of storage, gLite is
middleware that helps to fulfill the demands of huge computational power in
various scientific fields of geology, finance, physics and climatology.
A new trend to migrate grid applications from traditional scientific areas
such as high energy physics and life sciences to other domains including computational finance and geology is gaining interest.
This trend means that grid
infrastructures is going to change scientific research drastically in the near future.
It is not unlikely that grid middleware such as gLite is going to be used
for day-to-day operations of people.
