Observation of Elodea canadiensis cells
In this practice you will recognice some characteristics of the vegetal cell
1.
Place one Elodea leaf on a slide in a drop of water.
2.
Gently place a coverslip on the slide being careful not to create
bubbles.
3.
Focus on the Elodea using the 4x objective lens.
4.
Switch to the 10x objective lens.
5.
When changing objectives be careful to adjust only the fine focus
knob.
6.
Observe and draw a few Elodea cells in your lab book.
Label the
cell wall and the chloroplasts.
Record the amount of magnification
used to make your drawing and your estimate of cell size.
7.
Carefully observe the chloroplasts in a few cells to see if there is
any movement, a process called cytoplasmic streaming.
8.
Switch to the 40x objective lens.
9.
Move the fine focus knob slightly up and down to observe the
entire thickness of the cell.
10.
Switch back to the 10x objective.
11.
Carefully add 2-3 drops of 10% NaCl solution to the slide using a
paper
