It’s hard to find a definition for money.
Most simply, money is what we use to buy
things.
Before there was money, people paid for what they needed using barterthat is, they exchanged things they already had (usually things they made) for
things that they made.
Barter is still used all over the world when the value of a
country’s currency has dropped sharply, or simply between two friends when
one has something the other wants.
But sometimes barter can be difficult (I might
offer you my book in exchange for your map, but what if you don’t want my
book?).
To solve this problem, money was developed (You don’t want my book,
but I’ll give you these dollars for your map, so you can buy the book you want).
The first people to use money, the Lydian tribe, lived in the Middle East, about
2500 years ago.
The Lydians used gold and silver coins , and the use of coin
instead of barter spread all around the world.
