Canada’s Constitution dates to 1867, when the British Parliament passed the British North
America Act (now the Constitution Act, 1867).
Until 1982, amendments to the Constitution
required an Act to be passed by the British Parliament.
By the Canada Act 1982, Canada
severed all remaining legislative dependence on the United Kingdom.
This package of
constitutional amendments was dubbed "patriation", a uniquely Canadian term.
It included a
comprehensive amending formula, the Constitution Act, 1982, and the Canadian Charter of
Rights and Freedoms.
