When my kids and I go camping, I remind them that any stick they put into the fire has to remain in the fire. If they pull the stick back out, it is no longer just a stick but rather a fire hazard! The stick, when touched by fire, becomes set apart for the fire alone. Were you ever taught the “five-second rule”? After five seconds on the ground, food becomes garbage and is no longer fit for eating. The food is now set apart for the ground, not your mouth!
